Safety Specialist

Develop and lead the safety efforts by working with all levels in the organization with emphasis on manufacturing leadership to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries. This position leads safety internal teams, provides training on safety and health matters, and is responsible for the First Responders program. This person will spend a significant amount of time on the shop floor. The Safety Specialist also is the liaison to outside safety regulatory agencies.


Assess plant-wide safety performance, conduct monthly safety meetings with safety committee, and publish monthly meeting notes.
Develop and maintain effective, up to date, Safety and Health Policies, Procedures, and Emergency Response Plans.
Act as company representative to OSHA and the MN Safety Council.
Lead the Central Safety Team
Maintain and update the Safety Performance Management system as necessary.
Develop and maintain an effective safety and health promotional / incentive program.
Work closely with Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Engineering to ensure plans and specifications for new or proposed changes in processes, equipment or methods are reviewed for compliance with safety, health, and ergonomic standards before acceptance or use.
Provide training on Safety and Health.
Provide backup support for the Facility, Maintenance and Safety Manager.
Responsible for First Responder team for facility emergencies, medical, spill, severe weather, etc.
Respond to building security alarms.
Assist HR and Manufacturing on Workers Compensation and personal injury issues.
Work with unionized production employees regularly on the shop floor within the confines of the labor contract.



4-year degree in Industrial Technology or Industrial Safety & Industrial Hygiene desirable
2 to 4-years work experience, preferably in a manufacturing and union environment.
Certification as a CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or willingness to obtain.
Critical thinking and ability to rationalize complex issues from multiple perspectives.
